Research programmes

Our research is divided into 3 research programs (also known as research priority area): Prevention & Public Health, Immunity & Oral Health, and Regenerative & Reconstructive Dentistry.

From dental anxiety to the healing effect of saliva, our research responds to social developments.

Research programmes

  • Prevention & Public Health

This priority area focuses on research into effective and efficient strategies to maintain and promote oral health and well-being of individuals and populations across their life course.

  • Immunity & Oral Health

This priority area focuses on research into the quality of life and consists of the balance between the host and oral microbiome, biomaterials, (toxic) substances and nutrition. Factors such as saliva production and composition, as well as the resilience of different mucosal surfaces and hard tissues to inflammation and pathology, contribute to long-term oral health.

  • Regenerative & Reconstructive Dentistry

This priority area focuses on research into preserving and restoring chewing function at all stages of life. Tissue repair of the mucous, bone and teeth with an emphasis on 'self-repair' of the body are investigated here.
