Research of the department is focused on Oral Health-related Well-being and Behaviour, of both patients and general dental practitioners. Three general objectives are guiding the section’s research efforts:

• To monitor and improve the oral health of the Dutch population and to  increase patients’ quality of life and satisfaction and the public trust in  dentistry;
• To assess the determinants and general consequences of occupational stress  and well-being of general dental practitioners and their staff;
• To study dental anxiety and pain, two major barriers to seek and maintain  dental care, of both adult and child-patients, from a multidimensional perspective and with the help of psychologists, dentists, and double-trained staff-members.

Tandarts-angstbegeleiding Stichting Bijzondere Tandheelkunde (SBT) Introductie

Geschat wordt dat ruim 800.000 Nederlanders geen tandarts bezoeken vanwege angst. Uit onderzoek blijkt dat het in ongeveer 60% van deze gevallen gaat om een specifieke angst voor tandheelkundige situaties en objecten. In de overige gevallen is sprake van (een combinatie van tandartsangst en) andere psychische aandoeningen.

Diagnostiek en behandeling van extreme of pathologische vormen van angst voor de tandheelkundige behandeling vergen kennis op het gebied van psychologie, diagnostische vaardigheden en competenties op het gebied van gedragsbeïnvloeding. Deze deskundigheid is met name aanwezig binnen gespecialiseerde instellingen en praktijken, zoals Centra voor Bijzondere Tandheelkunde (CBT’s), waar extreem angstige tandartspatiënten zich kunnen laten behandelen.

Opleiding

Vanaf september 2001 bestaat er de mogelijkheid de differentiatieopleiding tot tandarts-angstbegeleiding te volgen. Deze driejarige (deeltijd-)opleiding stelt geïnteresseerde tandartsen in staat op dit terrein van de bijzondere tandheelkunde kennis en ervaring te verwerven.

De opleiding wordt gecoördineerd vanuit de Stichting Bijzondere Tandheelkunde (SBT) te Amsterdam in goed overleg met de Vereniging tot Bevordering der Tandheelkundige Gezondheid voor Gehandicapten (VBTGG). Kennis vanuit het Vakgebied Sociale Tandheelkunde, Stichting Bijzondere Tandheelkunde en de Open Universiteit geven de opleiding inhoudelijk gestalte. Het praktische deel van de opleiding wordt doorgaans bij een van de CBT’S gevolgd. Externe stages kunnen plaatsvinden in andere CBT’s en angstpraktijken, in Nederland of eventueel in het buitenland.
