Digital clinical training at ACTA: VR simulation and more

Within digital dentistry, we add new techniques to our teaching. This is how we prepare our students for a clinical environment that is increasingly digital.

Creating anatomical models in a virtual environment to mimic complicated processes allows students to develop their clinical skills in a controlled and safe environment. This prepares them for the challenges of modern dental practice.

Virtual simulators

Virtual dental simulators such as the Nissin Simodont Dental Trainer and the SimtoCare Dente are now indispensable tools in our education system. With these systems, students can practise dental procedures with realistic tactile feedback: the sensation created when the virtual drill makes contact with different dental tissues. For example, drilling into enamel feels harder than tooth decay (caries). This gives a realistic experience without risk to real patients.

These platforms also include software that guides students through a workflow that starts with analysing a patient case, followed by creating a treatment plan and selecting virtual instruments. This effectively links theory to practice.

Intraoral Scanners

Students can also use digital intraoral scanners, such as the 3Shape TRIOS and the Dentsply Sirona Primescan, in teaching. These make highly accurate 3D digital impressions of the oral cavity. Scanners like these are a good alternative to analogue impressions and increase patient comfort. In addition, these devices improve clinical efficiency and support digital planning of customised treatments.

Restorations in 1 appointment

With the Dentsply Sirona CEREC system , dental restorations - such as crowns, onlays, inlays and veneers - can be designed and made within 1 appointment. Using CAD/CAM technology, the patient's teeth are scanned, the restoration is digitally designed and made on site. This reduces treatment time and improves the patient experience.
