Manage your research profile in Pure

Pure is an instrument that can be used to register research output. A simple and user-friendly way for academic researchers to keep track of research output. You can use online sources such as Scopus and Web of Science in the process of registering output. You can find the instructions in LibGuides.

The contents of Pure are shown to the outside world in the VU Research Portal. For both academics and other interested parties, this information is quickly and easily accessible thanks to an advanced search function.

Showcase your research

The VU Research Portal is a powerful tool that helps you manage and showcase your research. The personal pages in the VU Research Portal gives you a chance to present yourself to the public. You are in full control of your own page and how to choose to  promote your research. 

Reporting

The VU Research Portal also ensures that ACTA can justify the use of funds to various organisations. The Pure administrators take care of these annual reports.

The contents of Pure are shown to the outside world on the scientist pages on ACTA.nl and VU.nl. These pages contain similar information as the Research Portal, but more concisely presented. The exception is your personal information, which remains the same as in Pure.

Advantages of the scientist pages

The indexation in Google is better for the scientist pages than the Research Portal. Both however can be found in Google Search.

Journalists will likely search the ACTA website first if they have a specfic question about dentistry. This tool will help them to find the expert and give them a brief overview of the expert's research.

Would you like to make the publisher's version of your publications available to anyone, free of charge and with no effort? In almost all cases, lecturers and researchers can share their publications openly in the VU Research Portal, six months after initial (non-Open Access) publication. ACTA and VU Amsterdam only need your permission to legally share your publications. The library will then automatically deposit published PDF-versions (Version of Record) of your academic publications in the VU Research Portal.

Tip: pay attention to the correct spelling of the name of our faculty and both our universities (Dutch).

• Preferably use a maximum of 300 words in total for personal information, research and teaching. Write it like a biosketch (a brief description of professional identity) that can be used for a conference submission or grant application. This will make it more inviting for peers and press to read it. See below for tips and tricks for promoting your profile like a biosketch.
• Focus on your most important achievements. What do you want to be known for?
• Only add information on ACTA related research or teaching activities. Describe other research or teaching activities only if relevant to your ACTA research career, and be concise.
• Write in the third person. For example, ‘prof. dr. Cees Kleverlaan is a professor in Dental Materials Science at ACTA’ or ’Jane Doe, MDDR, is a postgraduate student in Periodontology at ACTA.
• Do you expect to be less active in keeping your profile up to date? Make sure that you are less specific in, for example, years of experience.
• Use the correct spelling of the name of our faculty and mother universities.

Introduce yourself and describe your professional situation by giving your name, degree(s), and current institutional affiliation. See the examples in the ACTA-specific guidelines. Also describe the societal impact of your research.

This is also a good place to mention any awards. How far back do you go? The advice is to only mention awards from your current and previous role or career/development phase.
No awards (yet)? Mention professional affiliations, professional licenses, or involvement with national organisations. For example chairing a committee.

Are you a junior researcher? Only put down (post)graduate accomplishments when they are extraordinary or relevant to your interests. Focus on your more recent accomplishments.

First write down your main areas of focus/your expertise. And then communicate any accomplishments regarding these topics, especially if you’re the first researcher to develop a programme or study an issue.

Are you a senior researcher? Promote your experience and describe your research accomplishments. Many will use the phrase ‘best known for’. As in ‘Prof. Dr. Kleverlaan is best known for his work…’ or ‘Prof. Dr. Kleverlaan is best known for creating…’. Your interests are of lesser importance.

Are you more junior? Be more specific about your interests and the focus of your research.

Use bullets to sum up the subjects you teach. Do not use the name of the course you are teaching here, but name the subject of the course. Unless they are similar. This is to prevent you from having to adjust this part in the event of a name change, for example.

Also describe the societal impact of your teaching activities. And mention any prestigious teaching awards or grants you may have received.
