Oral health is essential for quality of life and consists of the balance between the host and oral microbiome, biomaterials, (toxic) substances and nutrition. Factors such as saliva production and composition, as well as the resilience of different mucosal surfaces and hard tissues to inflammation and pathology, contribute to long-term oral health. Within this priority area, research will focus on understanding the biology around the development and maintenance of oral health, and the functioning of the oral defences and immune system.
Emphasis will be on research on:
- Early diagnosis of oral and systemic diseases
- Development of preventive strategies to prevent oral diseases
- Patterns of specific disease states through efficient and effective processing and analysis of large amounts of clinical data and biological samples from a newly established biobank (e.g. Oral Biobank Amsterdam), including multi-omics data in combination with AI methodology.
