Orofacial Pain and Dysfunction

Here you will find information regarding the Orofacial Pain and Dysfunction section.

Patient care

The Orofacial Pain and Dysfunction section has its own staff clinic. Patients referred to this clinic are placed in a multidisciplinary treatment team consisting of dentists/gnathologists, a physiotherapist and a psychologist; whether or not in collaboration with doctors and specialists.

Education

Dentistry students receive regular education during their studies in the recognition and treatment of muscle, bone and joint complaints (musculoskeletal disorders) of the masticatory system, (sleep-related) oral movement disorders and dental wear. In addition, the section offers graduate dentists a 3-year postgraduate master's programme in dental gnathologists.

Research

In addition to doctoral research and research projects, the section also conducts research on behalf of third parties. The research focuses on: the diagnosis, treatment, causes and/or consequences of musculoskeletal disorders of the masticatory system, (sleep-related) oral movement disorders and dental wear.

Patients

Within the Orofacial Pain and Dysfunction clinic we treat patients with:

  • temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD: pain in the cheek and temple area or difficulty moving the lower jaw);
  • pain complaints in the orofacial region of non-dentogenic origin, e.g. pain from the nervous system;
  • dental sleep medicine, for example: teeth grinding or clenching and sleep apnea;
  • severe tooth wear.

Therapeutic Options

There are several therapeutic treatment options for your treatment that the practitioner can choose from, such as:

  • advice;
  • physiotherapy;
  • psychological care;
  • bite plate therapy (splint);
  • drug therapy;
  • Mandibular Reposition Device (MRA) for sleep apnea or snoring;
  • restoration of tooth wear.

What treatments are performed?

More information

  • Have you been referred by your dentist?

    For specialist dental care, your own dentist will register you at one of ACTA's staff clinics. This concerns special treatments that your own dentist prefers to have performed by a dentist (or general practitioner or medical specialist) with more experience. The staff clinics are located at the Amsterdam location.

  • Transaction overview

    Here you will find the performance codes for treatments within the Orofacial Pain and Dysfunction clinic. You can use these codes to inquire with your health insurer whether this consultation qualifies for reimbursement. When you are treated, a treatment plan will be drawn up in consultation with you (including the budgeted costs). You can then inquire again with your health insurer whether these treatments are eligible for reimbursement.

  • Referrers

    The Orofacial Pain and Dysfunction Clinic is mainly concerned with:

    • pain and function complaints within the masticatory system (musculoskeletal disorders of the masticatory system);
    • (sleep-related) oral movement disorders, such as teeth grinding and clenching (bruxism), and sleep apnea;
    • tooth wear due to bruxism.

    By researching, treating and teaching complaints and disorders within one discipline, justice is done to the fact that these are not isolated complaints and disorders, but disorders that show a high degree of interdependence. After all, chewing system complaints can be the result of oral movement disorders such as clenching and grinding, and these harmful oral habits can in turn cause excessive tooth wear.

  • Do you want to refer a patient?

    You can refer your patient to us by downloading a referral card or sending a referral letter to ACTA. Please indicate in both cases:

    • which patient it concerns
    • what the patient's complaint is
    • what you have done to resolve the complaint and with what results
    • what is your request*
    • other relevant dental and medical information
    • diagnostics/second opinion; yes/no request to carry out the treatment of your patient

    Send the referral letter or card, with your signature, to the following address:

     ACTA, Clinic for Orofacial Pain and Dysfunction
    attn. Appointments & Information service
    PO Box 7822
    1008 AA Amsterdam

    As soon as the dentists have completed the diagnostic consultation, you will receive a letter with the findings and possibly a treatment proposal. This also applies to the moment the treatment is completed; you will then receive a treatment letter.
