Endodontology

This graduation profile is one of the 5 graduation profiles within ACTA's postgraduate master's programme in Oral Health Sciences.

The department of Endodontology at ACTA has been offering a postgraduate endodontic programme since 1992. It is one of very few English-taught postgraduate programmes in Europe which has been accredited by the European Society of Endodontology (ESE). The aim of this graduation profile is to train dentists in Endodontology at a specialist level. The Endodontology programme contains a highly integrated selection of courses and emphasises the development of a strong basic scientific background together with advanced diagnostic and clinical skills. The profile director (a.i.) dr. H. Shemesh is supported by 10 endodontic specialists who all work part-time at ACTA. Every year 3-5 postgraduate students are carefully selected for the 3 year full-time Endodontology graduation profile.

Outline of the endodontology programme

In addition to seminars and tutorials, a considerable amount of time is devoted to treatment of patients referred by general practitioners. The clinical part involves extensive training in diagnosis and treatment of endodontic diseases, pain and trauma, surgical endodontics, and special-care patient’s groups. Research training within the field of Endodontology is also part of the programme. At the end of the final year, students present the results of their individual research projects in a written report which is suitable for publication in an international peer-reviewed journal. The goal of the entire programme is to prepare motivated dentists for a career in a multitude of areas, including clinical practice, teaching and research.

Diploma

All Oral Health Sciences students are conferred a joint master’s degree in Oral Health Sciences by both the University of Amsterdam and VU Amsterdam, which specifies the chosen graduation profile. Additionally, Endodontology graduates are eligible for 'endodontist specialist' member status from the European Society of Endodontology (ESE) and will be recognised as endodontists by the Dutch Association of Endodontology (NVvE).
