Periodontology

The aim of this profile is to train postgraduate students in periodontology at a specialist level in periodontology.

Organising department and faculty 

The programme is organised by the Department of Periodontology. Prof. Bruno Loos is profile director and Dr Monique Danser course director. Professor Loos obtained a MSc in Periodontology from the Loma Linda University, USA in 1985. In 1992, he received a PhD in Oral Biology from the State University of New York at Buffalo, USA. Dr. Danser obtained her PhD in Periodontology from ACTA in 1996 and her MSc in Periodontology in 2005, also at ACTA.
The Department of Periodontology participates in undergraduate teaching, performs patient treatment in its own departmental clinic, frequently provides short postgraduate courses and enjoys a strong reputation in basic and clinical research.

  • Graduation Profile in Periodontology

    The aim of this profile is to train postgraduate students in periodontology at a specialist level in periodontology. This is done through a programme of seminars and tutorials, which include an extensive review of the literature. Furthermore, considerable time is allocated to the treatment of patients suffering from specific periodontal diseases who are referred by general practitioners. Also education and clinics in implant dentistry specifically for periodontontitis patinets will be provided.

    Extensive training in research within the broad field of periodontology or implant dentistry is also part of the programme. The results of the research project conducted must be presented in the form of a manuscript (thesis) suitable for publication. The programme includes a residency in an accredited private periodontal practice, enabling the students to put theory into practice.

  • Diploma

    After passing the final exams and successfully defending the thesis, the candidate will be awarded a ‘Diploma in Clinical Periodontology and Implant Dentistry’ by the Department of Periodontology at ACTA, and an ‘EFP Certificate of Completion of Specialized Training (CCST) in Periodontology, Periodontics and Implant Dentistry’.

    A joint Master’s degree in Oral Health Sciences will be awarded by both the University of Amsterdam and the VU University Amsterdam.
